Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-Sur-Mer

The geometry of the American Cemetery was astonishing

Robert and Preston Niland are buried in this row, two of the brothers who died (a third Niland brother was presumed dead but later showed up alive) and for which reason Sgt. Fritz Niland was spared the rest of the war, the fictionalized version of which came down through cinema history as Saving Private Ryan.

Probably the most interesting thing about the cemetery is how few people actually died here on D-Day itself; from our experience it seemed like 1/10th or less.

Mercer was not with us on this adventure
